Field Notes

Description:

A large caterpillar, at least 80mm in length.
Very hairy, have 2 pairs of long hair tufts beside its head.
The most distinctive feature of this species is its scary skull-like face. It is also as aggressive as it looks, instead of trying to crawl away from me, it tried to fend me off by rising its head towards me (see the last photo). Possibly the caterpillar of a Lebeda species from the Lasiocampidae family.

Habitat:

Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, Sandakan, Sabah.

Notes:

>>>Map accuracy : 500 m diameter. Another spotting of a similar creature http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/9397401

Thank you Sergio and rams4d. The forests here in RDC and Sepilok are really amazing places for caterpillars! I have also found a species of caterpillar that feeds on and mimics lichen, but I am saving that spotting for next time :-D
Awesome cat, Chun! Looks like you found a new caterpillars heaven!
Thanks alicelongmartin, this sure is one of the coolest ones.
