Field Notes

Description:

I found this green crab spider on a Lantana leaf waiting to ambush a prey. Its features look like the Green Crab Spider, Misumessus oblongus, however, M. oblongus is an American species. For further ID.

Crab spider is a common name applied loosely to many species of spiders, but most nearly consistently to members of the family Thomisidae. Among the Thomisidae it refers most often to the familiar species of "flower crab spiders", though not all members of the family are limited to ambush hunting in flowers.

Habitat:

Backyard garden.

Thanks Rieko. Those are the 8 eyes, I believe, just like in this image - http://www.insectidentification.org/pictureviewer/insect-pic-detail.asp?identification=Green-Crab-Spider&sCurrentPic=pic1. 3 rows of eyes: from the top, 4 eyes; 2 eyes on the middle row; and another 2 eyes on the bottom row. I regret that I was not able to get a clear shot of its head/face.
The red mark on the back of the spider;s head is really cool.
