Description:

A Costa Rican ran up to me, grabbed my arm and shouted "Jesu Cristo, Jesu Cristo!!!" I honestly thought a person had fallen into the crocodile infested river, so I wasn't expecting to see this lizard.

Species ID Suggestions

Common Basilisk

Basiliscus basiliscus

Your description is so funny, I can picture the whole scene in my head. Anyway, I think the lizard is a common basilisk (Basiliscus basiliscus) also called a Jesu Cristo in Spanish because of its ability to run on the surface of water when it is threatened.
