Field Notes

Description:

This was a small perching fish, about 1 and 1/2 inches long. It was light brown with darker brown checker marks and zig-zag lines, with reddish markings on its fins, and a bright green spot by each gill cover. Its eyes were pretty far forward on its head. It would dart quickly from stone to stone and freeze for a second or two. It also hid under the rocks if I stepped too close.

Habitat:

This was a clear, fast moving stream about a foot deep here and varying to something like ten feet deep in other nearby spots (a tributary of the Duck river). There were lots of small snails in this spot, some larger fish in other areas, and some more vegetated areas. The surrounding land was farmland, meadow, and forest.

Notes:

There were a bunch of these fish swimming around me, so the photos may not all be of the same individual. The fish were spaced out about one per 2 feet squared.
