Field Notes

Description:

Fairly large, mostly white bird with some black, perhaps crow size. Please notice the very long tail that reaches all the way to the green leaves on the left. In the photo, the beak looks like it almost has a greenish tint, although I'm not sure if that's just a trick of the light or what. Can't seem to find a good match in my bird book (but, as I mention below, I didn't get a great view of it).

Habitat:

Seen on a trek to some waterfalls near the town of Sungai Medang on the edge of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia.

Notes:

Sorry this is such a terrible shot. I was on a slippery ledge, and couldn't re-position well enough before it flew off, so didn't get a great view myself.

Species ID Suggestions

Green-billed Malkoha

Phaenicophaeus tristis

Liam, the shape and size definitely looks about right (and the greenish bill as well). But I'm hesitant because of how white this one seemed to me. Do you think that there could be that much color variation?

My guess is Large Scimitar Babbler.... Check if it is observed in your area.... http://orientalbirdimages.org/search.php?Bird_ID=1454&Bird_Image_ID=16774&Bird_Family_ID=&p=12
Yeah, I originally thought it would be easy to identify due to it being mostly white and having the really long tail, but after searching my bird book, I'm at a loss. Or maybe it's still a juvenile, despite its large size and has some different coloration? If I had gotten a better look at it, it probably wouldn't be so difficult. Hopefully there's someone out there with an idea!
