Field Notes

Description:

This is a medium sized bird in the Toucan family. The head, breast, back and wings are coal black. The beak is black and yellow. The stomach is yellow with two black bars across it.

Habitat:

These birds are frequently seen at lower levels as they eat the fruit of various trees. They are normally solitary, but sometimes pairs will be seen. They are common throughout the Amazon rainforests of SE Ecuador and Northern Peru.

Notes:

While the picture isn't the best, I have seen enough of these to accurately describe it. They are extremely pretty with their bright colors if caught on a sunny day. This was taken on a cloudy day.
