Field Notes

Description:

This dog was one of the countless strays found all over the Dominican Republic. In particular, this small pup was spotted in La Romana, DR. She was small in stature, similar to most dogs in this region, and particularly spirited. I could not identify the specific breed as I am sure it is a mix of countless varieties. Virtually every dog was short but lanky with a tan and black coloring.

Fun fact: Many locals call strays Boca Negra, or Black Mouth!

Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Canidae
Genus: Canis
Species: Canis Lupus
Subspecies: Canis Lupus Familiaris

Habitat:

This little pup, just like all of her friends & foe, lives on the streets of La Romana. She eats from trash piles and steals sips of water that collect in ditches after a storm. She looked like she was just beginning to fend for herself. Most females around where our pup was discovered were either pregnant or feeding young.

Notes:

Over spring break, I traveled to La Romana, Dominican Republic on a mission trip. Not only was I deeply disheartened by the quality of life for many people living in the DR, but I was also shocked to see how much of a problem there was with stray dogs. This issue stems directly from the economic instability of the region and lack of resources to spay and neuter strays. To help, you can learn more and donate here: http://www.dogsandcatsdr.com/

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (3)

Hello alexandrathayden and Welcome to the Project Noah community! I change the spotting for pet categorie for you :-) We hope you like the website as much as we do. There are many aspects to the site and community. The best way to get started is to read the FAQs at http://www.projectnoah.org/faq where you can find all the tips, advice and "rules" of Project Noah. You, like the rest of the community, will be able to suggest IDs for species that you know (but that have not been identified), and make useful or encouraging comments on other users' spottings (and they on yours). There are also "missions" you can join and add spottings to. See http://www.projectnoah.org/missions . A mission you should join is the http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/2165776002 to chose the best wild photo of 2018,only the spottings added to that mission are eligible.Note that most missions are "local". Be sure not to add a spotting to a mission that was outside of mission boundaries or theme :) Each mission has a map you may consult showing its range. We also maintain a blog archive http://blog.projectnoah.org/ where we have posted previous articles from specialists from different geographical areas and categories of spottings, as well as wildlife "adventures". So enjoy yourself, share, communicate, learn. See you around :)
