Description:

This dog was one of the countless strays found all over the Dominican Republic. In particular, this small pup was spotted in La Romana, DR. She was small in stature, similar to most dogs in this region, and particularly spirited. I could not identify the specific breed as I am sure it is a mix of countless varieties. Virtually every dog was short but lanky with a tan and black coloring.

Fun fact: Many locals call strays Boca Negra, or Black Mouth!

Habitat:

This little pup, just like all of her friends & foe, lives on the streets of La Romana. She eats from trash piles and steals sips of water that collect in ditches after a storm. She looked like she was just beginning to fend for herself. Most females around where our pup was discovered were either pregnant or feeding young.

Notes:

Over spring break, I traveled to La Romana, Dominican Republic on a mission trip. Not only was I deeply disheartened by the quality of life for many people living in the DR, but I was also shocked to see how much of a problem there was with stray dogs.
