Field Notes

Description:

About 5 mm long, this long legged fly had black patterns on wings. Thorax and body were a metallic blue-green and the legs a pale olive green.
The first three pics are definitely that of a male. The fourth pic could be a female. The halteres are a pale yellow (pic #1)

Habitat:

suburban garden - they are said to feed on Aphids.

Distribution:

Notes:

I had previously spotted a Dolichopodid fly Heteropsilopus cingulipes
http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/15791861 but this is a different species- H. ingenuus.
BrisbaneInsects website lists these as Austrosciapus connexus
http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_Dolichopodid/GreenLongLeggedFly…

I choose to leave this spotting as H.ingenuus until further confirmation is available.

There appears to be several Groups of Dolichopodid flies :
"Heteropsilopus comprises three Groups: the
trilagatus Group from southern India and Sri Lanka, and the cingulipes and brevicornis Groups
with a Bassian distribution in Australia, comprising 17 species, ten newly described.
The new genus Austrosciapus comprises 42 Australian species, 35 newly described....." Source: Records of the Australian Museum (1994) Supplement 21, DANIEL J.BICKEL.
