Field Notes

Description:

Caps hemispherical or forming a ‘rosette’,; approximately 3 inches wide; concentric zones of colors – primarily pinks, pale purples and browns. Underside has white ‘gills,’
I photographed this fungus over a 3-month period - August 25th, 2016 to December 22, 2016 - to follow the color changes. The colors gradually fade. The colors, although faded, were more intense on December 6, 2016, after recent rain.

Habitat:

Growing on a fallen log at the edge of a mixed hardwood/pine woods.

Notes:

Gills on the underside of the brackets distinguish Lenzites betulina from Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) which has pores on the underside.
