Field Notes

Description:

Large marble sized wasp gall. Slightly bumpy outer surface. Small cell in the center of the gall surrounded by a spongy looking material. Either Amphibolips confluenta or quercusspongifica.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Rockwood Park, Virginia.

Thank you PucaK. It looks like it is one of two that seem to be difficult to distinguish. A. confluenta or quercusspongifica. I can at least ID this to genus now. :-) http://bugguide.net/node/view/356645
