Field Notes

Notes:

This guy was fishing at Karumba i the Gulf of Carpentaria Qld. I'm pretty sure it's a kite but not sure of the exact type. Not too good with raptors.

Thanks EnvUnlimited. I love nature and photography so it is a great meld.
Thanks for the info Alice. Black Kite was my guess but didn't want to take the chance on being wrong. Maybe the juvenile was there with it's Mum.
I showed my father ( who was a national parks ranger) the photos of the growth and he believes it's some sort of fungal growth that they have been known to get
They're both black kites, however the one in the last two photos is a juvenile.
I thought that it was the one bird but you know now I look, a second kite must have flown in and I've thought it was the same one. They don't tend to sit still for too long. It was at the same place and time though. Yes I saw the growths. Maybe someone out there can tell us what it is.
Wow amazing looking! Nice captures also :)
Are these two different kites? The last two pictures look like the bird has some kind of growths on it's face. Poor baby, but nice series.
