River clubtail
Gomphus flavipes
48.251, 26.7325
Field Notes
Description:
Slightly larger than most species in this genus, abdomen more slender and widened in the last segments (8-9). 50-55 mm long, eyes widely separated and blue, indicating this is a male. Thorax yellow with black stripes.
Habitat:
Nearby the riverbank of a large, slow-flowing, lowland river. The riverbank itself was quite open, no heavy aquatic vegetation.
Notes:
The first time I am seeing this species in the wild, the populations are restricted to certain areas of large rivers. G. flavipes has become an endangered species in most Western European countries due to water pollution and river regulation. The species is listed in the Annex IV of Habitats Directive.
