Field Notes

Description:

Large lizard. Gray coloured.

Habitat:

We had stopped to pay toll tax on a stretch of road in Madhya Pradesh and I looked out of the car's window to see the lizard sunning itself on this pile of stone chips.

Notes:

V.bengalensis, V.griseus and V.flavescens are found in Madhya Pradesh.
I cannot judge the species from the nostril distance as Scott showed me...am relying on his kindness again.
There is an interesting historical story associated with these monitor lizards:

Tanaji, fighting for Shivaji at the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670 to recapture the fortress of Kondana near Pune, India tied ropes to these lizards and made them scale the vertical walls. These lizards have excellent grip and once they successfully climbed the ramparts Tanaji and his men scaled the walls using the ropes tied to the lizards...obviously the lizards managed to support their weights. Tanaji died in the attack but the fort was won!
