Field Notes

Description:

This is a kind of piciforme bird, which belongs to the family Ramphastidae which measures about 35cm, ever be confused because of its colorful widely yellowish.

It feeds on fruits (particularly the palm) and insects, as well as eggs and young of other birds. Enjoying Michelia champaca (Magnolia yellow). They live in small groups, usually around six or seven individuals.

They build their nests in tree cavities, laying 2-4 white eggs.

Habitat:

They live in the mountainous regions of eastern Brazil, occurring from the states of Espírito Santo (Limoeiro), Rio de Janeiro (Serra dos Órgãos and Itatiaia) and Minas Gerais (Viçosa) to Rio Grande do Sul, Misiones (Argentina), in eastern of Paraguay and also in northeastern of Brazil, in the state of Pernambuco (Serra Negra).

Notes:

The town of the coordinates that I gave for search, is not DUQUE DE CAXIAS, as reports the search map of this page, but PETRÓPOLIS.
