Field Notes

Description:

This is a large spider, with a body about an inch long and a leg span, front to back of about 3½" But it's most obvious feature is its golden orb web, the circular orb part of which might span more that three feet. Add in the connecting strands leading to nearby trees, and it could be 10 feet across! The strands are extremely strong, so it isn't a pleasure to run into unexpectedly.

Habitat:

This one had created a large orb between trees across a path through the humid rainforest long the Amazon River.

Notes:

Rather than disturb the web, I went off the trail to go around.
