Field Notes

Description:

Chrysomelidae; Galerucinae; Luperini; Aulacophora indica Gmelin, 1790. I am slightly concerned about my identification of the beetle in my pictures above. A. indica is a very common pest of cucurbit plants in our area. So I have accumulated a number of photos over the years. The majority of my pictures show very smooth elytra, but I have some, like this one, which have rather "wrinkled" looking elytra. I have always put those pictures on one side as I am unsure about them. However, on inaturalist.org, there are many A. indica displayed with smooth elytra and almost as many with elytra like those shown here. In the absence of more information, I can only assume that the "wrinkled" elytra are perhaps a variant form or more likely the result of the ageing process.

Habitat:

This Cucurbit Beetle was spotted on a small Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta) locally called Oliba, in our front yard.
