Field Notes

Description:

The breeding Spotted Sandpiper does indeed have spots covering the throat and breast but this adult is typical of the non-breeding/winter Spotted Sandpiper found in southern California at this time of year. Love the fresh white plumage of its breast and undertail coverts.

Habitat:

Breeds along shores of lakes and streams but this one is wintering along the shore of the San Diego harbour. A lot of energy goes into producing two plumages each year for many birds, including this one.
