Field Notes

Description:

Small, distinctive duck. Narrow, serrated bill. Both male and female are crested. Males have black uppers with a bright white patch on the crest and white markings on the chest and wings, reddish sides, black bill and a yellow eye. Females are brown and gray with a reddish crest, lighter bill.

Juveniles are similar in color to females.

Habitat:

Bronx Zoo, open outdoor waterfowl enclosure.

Notes:

Seen year round here. I believe these were wild and not part of the captive collection of birds. The enclosure is open so wild birds can and do visit.
