Velvet Mite
Trombidium holosericeum
42.6358, -74.6484
Field Notes
Description:
Adults tend to wander and hunt for food while the larvae will attach themselves to insects and other arachnids, living off their body fluids. The bright red color is a warning to predators that they are toxic. They pose no threat to humans.
Notes:
About 3 to 4 mm. One of the largest I've ever seen.
