Description:

A medium-sized toad, apparently nocturnal.

Habitat:

Savanna/woodland

Notes:

Observed at the Environmental Education Centre, Mlawula Nature Reserve

My field guide says, for the Olive Toad (Ameitophrynus garmani), and in bold print, No patches on the snout. This toad has patches on the snout. So curious as to why it is an Olive Toad?

I am not at home right now and don't have my field guide with me, but I can check when I get home. I ruled out all the other possibilities, so am interested to see how I ruled out Olive.

Ashley, apparently this one is the Olive toad, rather than the Guttural toad - I think the difference is in the shape of the patches on the snout? ... e.g. compared with this one: http://vmus.adu.org.za/vm_view_record.php?vm=FrogMAP-1557

Too bad he does not croak for us whiles we stay there! I bet he could "sing" quite loud! Beautiful series!!

No problem! The internet didn't help me at all, I had to look in my field guide. It was between Guttural and Raucous, and the way to tell them apart is Guttural has patches on the snout where Raucous doesn't.

Thanks, Ashley! That was one of my guesses, but I just don't know enough about frogs and toads to know what distinguishes them.
