Field Notes

Description:

This elm is native to eastern North America and, prior to the introduction of Dutch Elm disease in 1930, individual trees would grow up to 30 m in height. The dark green leaves have saw-toothed edges and turn bright yellow in the fall. Dutch Elm disease, caused by a fungus spread by bark beetles, has damaged most of the populations of the American Elm in the United States.

Habitat:

Rich woods, floodplains, stream banks.
