Field Notes

Description:

Small, pink, shaggy-capped mushroom. Only one specimen found. No more than 6 cms in height. Convex cap with a matted surface and the margin almost clasps the stem, so this is a reasonably young specimen. Cap flattens out as it ages. Covered with squamules (small scales) that can be either pressed against the cap or curved back on itself. Smooth stipe that's a yellowish colour, and ring is like peeling skin (if it is a ring?). No gills but a sponge-like pore surface instead.

Habitat:

Native bushland in the Mt. Coot-tha Forest Reserve. Spotted on the Stringybark Track. Area generally dry but leaf litter in more shaded areas still reasonably moist. Mushroom growing in soil and leaf litter beside a sandstone rock.

Notes:

Many thanks to Marc Pralong who spotted this specimen. He has a very sharp eye.

Thanks, Leuba. Looks more like an old, matted mop than a pineapple to me. Yes, good IDing, Mark.
Nice spotting Neil -great-looking bolete. Wouldn't have thought to check out boletes. Good IDing Mark.
That'll do nicely thanks, Mark. So it's a polypore?
