Description:
Brown and tan butterfly with black and white spots. This is the classic position for the Hackberry emperor- upside down.
Habitat:
Spotted in a dry creek bed at Lake Catherine State Park. These butterflies could care less for flowers. They prefer forests, and wooded areas, and especially prefers areas near rivers or other bodies of water. The species is not very deterred by human development. Furthermore, the hackberry emperor may be seen near woodland edges, near creeks, around buildings, and around damp, muddy areas.
Notes:
Range is eastern and southern United States and into Mexico.
