Field Notes

Description:

After studying these shots at home I realised it was similar to a fungus I spotted just over a month ago. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/21680076 I was impressed with the changes so decided to post. This one is quite leathery on top and down the stipe and has an attractive silver-on-black and deep magenta sheen. The magenta tint seems to be remnant of the deep red margin on the younger version. The stipe is also very tough, clearly demarked, also with fine pores. The pored surface is still brilliant white with small round pores. About 90mm wide.

Habitat:

On an old eucalyptus log with moss. Inside a national park in very tall eucalyptus rain forest.

Notes:

Genevieve Gates has suggested Polyporus melanopus for visually similar. http://www.elfram.com/fungi/fungi_q/polymel_a.html
