Description:
Gilt darter have a maximum length of approximately 80 - 95 mm. Their distribution is widespread.

Breeding season: April - early July. Males have been observed establishing territories in the upper portions of riffles during the breeding season.
Food consists of hydropsychid caddisflies, mayflies, midges, and blackflies. However, like most fishes, they are most likely opportunistic and feed on whatever is available at that time.
Habitat:
According to Etnier and Starnes, the gilt darter occurs in upland rivers where it is more commonly observed in shallow riffle areas having moderate to fast moving currents and substrates of gravel, sand, and scattered rubble free vegetation. These streams are generally clear with minimal turbidity.
