Lone star tick (female)
Amblyomma americanum
35.9021, -86.8826
Field Notes
Description:
Like all ticks, it can be a vector of diseases including human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis, canine and human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and Southern tick-associated rash illness.
Though the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease has occasionally been isolated from lone star ticks, numerous vector competency tests have demonstrated that this tick is extremely unlikely to be capable of transmitting Lyme disease.
Habitat:
Semi rural
Notes:
One of 17 I found on me after spending 40 minutes in my yard. :-(
