Field Notes

Description:

The Australian Painted Lady is native to, as the name would suggest, Australia although they have gradually been dispersed westward of Australia by the wind, making it a fairly common sight in New Zealand as well. I was lucky enough to see this one at the end of January and luckier still to take a photo of it before it flew away.

Habitat:

Flax and onion grass on dry, sand soil near the top of Mount Victoria
