Description:

Grandidier's Baobab is the biggest and most famous of Madagascar's six species of baobabs. This specimen (pictured), although small, has the potential to reach 25 to 30m in height.

Habitat:

Endemic to the island of Madagascar where it is threatened by the encroachment of agricultural land and commercial exploitation. Used to inhabit dry, deciduous forest, especially near seasonal rivers or lakes. However, today it is mainly found in open, agricultural land or degraded scrubland. This specimen was spotted in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens at Mt. Coot-Tha.

Notes:

Grandidier's Baobab is classified as endangered by the IUCN Red List 2006.
