Field Notes

Description:

The Ivory Whip Grevillea is an Australian native and a member of the family Proteaceae. It's a small shrub that grows to a height of about 2 metres. The flowers are ivory white and yellow, and like all Grevillea's, is bird-attracting.

Habitat:

Usually found in open woodlands or on escarpments and ridges in sandy soils. This particular species can also tolerate cooler climates. This specimen was spotted at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, Mt. Coot-tha.

Notes:

I love all species of Grevillea. Their flowers never fail to attract all sorts of native birds.

I didn't think to squeeze one, Mark, but the small green buds were covered with some sort of fluid... possibly nectar. There was no rain so I know it wasn't water. Grevilleas are my favourite Aussie flowers. So many varieties, and the birds just go nuts over them :-)
Grevillea flowers blow me away too. Can you shake much nectar out of this one ?
