Field Notes

Description:

Their coats are much darker now than they are in the summer time. I often see them nearby, but this was my first time seeing them on the beach. They are considered domesticated, but they are free to roam a large area in the Chiniak/Pasagshak area.

Habitat:

Sandy beach called Surfer's Beach near lots of mountains.

They sure are a long way from their natural home! Kind of startling to see them in Alaska. Bison are never truly domesticated; they have only been "ranched" for the last few decades. They don't observe fences particularly, and are naturally inclined to roam in order to find food, especially during winter. What do they graze on there I wonder?
Thanks Daniele! Yes you are right. However, they pretty much fend for themselves and don't seem to stay in enclosed grazing areas
These are spectacular in this setting Machi! Beautiful shots. I guess this is a domesticated herd allowed to roam free?
Fabulous spotting Machi! Great shots. Thank you for sharing :)
