Field Notes

Description:

The boldly striped black and white wing pattern is aposematic, warning off predators. The adult butterflies are unusual in feeding on pollen as well as on nectar. The pollen enables them to synthesize cyanogenic glycosides that make their bodies toxic to potential predators so their coloration helps predators to warn them that they are not edible.
Adults roost in groups of up to 60 individuals on a nightly basis, returning to the same roost every night.
Caterpillars feed on various species of Passionflower, evading the plants' defensive trichomes by biting them off or laying silk mats over them.

Habitat:

Forests that can be found above 1000 m such as coffee crop lands. See this web site for distribution in Costa rica:

Veo que has disfrutado con la multitud de mariposas.
Kathleen: I place below the link to the butterfly garden for you. It is the oldest butterfly garden in Monteverde. When I was there for the first time in 2002 it was already there. It is away from town, in the road, half way to the entrance to the Monteverde park entrance but in a secondary road on the right as you are going towards Monteverde park. Some are in outdoor gardens protected by nets and others are in indoors gardens. Later on I had the chance to make pics of butterflies really in the wild but I would have missed all of these species I am posting now if it was not thanks to this garden. Many other people that passes by Monteverde pays a visit to this garden, is worthy :-) http://www.monteverdebutterflygarden.com/
Thanks, Marta. So are they in enclosures in these photos then? or outdoor butterfly gardens? I have been to Monteverde but cannot remember the Butterfly garden there. I so wish I had owned a good camera then and known about Project Noah! but I loved Monteverde and enjoyed watching the birds there so much!
Hi Kathleen: I have seen them in the wild, I think in La Fortuna area but they were always really fast for making pictures. These are living in the Butterfly Garden in Monteverde. They are raised and kept in captivity. The garden people tries to keep species from Costa Rica in three different gardens arranged according to their natural distribution by altitude. :-)
Wonderful to see these in the wild! I have only seen them in a Butterfly house:) Great spotting.
