Field Notes

Description:

100 year old bamboo grove. Golden Bamboo (aka Buddha’s Belly Bamboo) is an open-clump type bamboo species, and a member of the Poaceae family of plants. Among bamboo species, it is one of the largest and most easily recognized.

Habitat:

These specimens were spotted in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, Mt. Coot-Tha.

Notes:

This clumping bamboo, Bambusa vulgaris, was planted prior to the development of the gardens (which opened in 1970). The grove is unique as it is over 100 years old and has not yet flowered. This bamboo is considered precious as when the bamboo flowers it also dies. The cycle will then recommence with the replanting of the bamboo grove.

I was surprised this stand was so old.... and when it flowers, it dies. It was certainly a beautiful grove and would be awesome for shade in summer.
That's a good stand of the stuff. Fabulous species - just a pity it doesn't grow here very well.
