Field Notes

Description:

A large heavy-bodied loon with a thick, pointed black or dark grey bill held horizontally. Head and neck black with white bands on neck. Back black with white spots.

Habitat:

Nests on forested lakes, ponds and rivers.

Notes:

In the photo taken at a distance, the loon on the left has a freshly caught fish in its bill. In the other photo it was flapping its wings after swallowing the fish. We saw this pair on Rich Lake in the Adirondack State Park in New York State, USA. I felt if I had waited the extra second for my lens to zoom in I would not have caught the photo of the fish in the loon's bill.
