Field Notes

Description:

I was taking a series of shots of this day-flying wasp moth mid-afternoon when suddenly, its hair-pencil extruded. Within seconds, the hair-pencil retracted. Was it feeling some sort of threat?

Habitat:

Spotted it on the under a leaf of Bird's-nest fern in the backyard.
