Description:
Pileated Woodpeckers are mainly black with a red crest, and have a white line down the sides of the throat. They show white on the wings in flight. Adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat; in adult females these are black.
Habitat:
Woodland trail at local metropark.
Notes:
Why is the bird is named “pileated?” There's a simple reason behind that: It derives from the Latin pileatus, meaning "capped." Just one glance at this bird's bright crest explains the name.
