Field Notes

Description:

In Belgium they call this moth Spanish Flag. I still don´t know very well why because it is not exactly alike the Spanish flag and actually some years is also common sight in Belgium.

In this spotting you can see that the underwings are beautiful red. It seems to like very much the flowers of the Hemp-Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum), plant which in spite of its name does not seem to have anything to do with cannabis (in case you wondered :-).

Habitat:

Our lab garden, KU Leuven.

Beautiful butterfly-looking moth
Thanks, Sarala, ceherzog and the others :-) It is definitely a diurnal moth found in several parts of Europe. The past years in Belgium have not been so good, at least in my area, to spot these moths but this year I was very happy to spot them more often and just in our semi-wild garden in the Biology department where I work (I call it semi-wild because the plants there are not really taken care off much and they are species of plants found in Belgium in the wild; also the garden is open so butterflies etc come in and out at "gusto").
Pretty amazing. It looks more like a butterfly, even the antennae. Also active during the day. How strange.
Hola Victor, muchas gracias y bienvenido a PN! Si, soy española aunque vivo en Belgica. Al parecer los dos hemos tenido la oportunidad de encontrar animales y plantas bonitos en UK. Yo por que hace poco estuve de vacaciones en Escocia. Bienvenido a Project Noah! :-)
