Field Notes

Description:

This spent 24 hours on the window in the hotel until I released it.
It likes dark places during the day, crevices in trees in the forest, or under things and is well disguised on tree trunks. Walking in the cloud forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica, we would disturb them as we walked by and they would fly a short distance and settle into a dark place again. There were many in the forest, and the guide said he hadn't seen so many, for years.

Habitat:

Monteverde cloud forest, Costa Rica.

Great, thanks bayucca. Now I recall the name!
Nymphalidae, Satyrinae, Manataria hercyna maculata.
#1 is s butterfly, #2 is a moth, Erebidae, Letis sp.
Yes, I wondered about that... I think the first photo is of a butterfly and the second one is a moth. I remember I let the butterfly out in the morning, but thought I had taken the open wing shot before I did so. Now I'm not so sure. I think I'll make them into 2 spottings.
Are you positive both of the pictures that you posted are of the same lepidopteran?
I also think it might be a butterfly. It likes dark places during the day, crevices in trees in the forest, or under things and is well disguised on tree trunks. Walking in the clous forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica, we would disturb them as we walked by and they would fly a short distance and settle into a dark place again.
I'm not sure, but I am curious to know! This is one of the moths that I often see on my mothing sheet at 2 am.
