Field Notes

Description:

This butterfly is small in size and is olive green with rust coloring. It has brown edgings with jagged white lines on wings. It also has visible white spots on wings. Antennae and legs are striped.

Habitat:

Habitat: Includes fields, bluffs, woodlands, areas where Juniper trees are located.
Range: Texas to Florida, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Baja California.

Host trees:Junipers.
Adult food sources include but are not limited to the following: flower nectar from winter cress, dogbane, milkweed, butterfly weed, and white sweet clover.

Notes:

I spotted this little guy while visiting the Texas hill country. He was very difficult to photograph due to its' constant movement. Such a pretty little butterfly!

Fun Facts: Males sit atop host trees in order to attract females (a very laid back approach to finding a mate)! Lifespan is 6-9 weeks from egg to end of adult stage.
