Junonia coenia

Field Notes
Description:
The beautiful Buckeye Butterfly of the Family Nymphalidae is a commonly seen species on the coast of California. Its strange color combinations and multiple eye spots make it one of my favorites. It is found throughout most of the United States and south to Colombia. They feed on nectar and also get moisture from damp sand and rocks.
Habitat:
This one was on display in the Butterfly House of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
