Marsh Thistle
Cirsium palustre
53.2963, -1.98733
Field Notes
Description:
The stem was hollow-ish and difficult to chew and eat since it was so tough and stringy. according to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45GiiSii3Zo the Marsh thistle needs the outer layer of the stem peeled off in order to eat the inner pith. I tried to do this and it was very difficult because the hollow stem made the thin layer of edible material difficult to isolate. here's a description of the Marsh Thistle that also mentions the Welted thistle as the most confused thistle with this species: http://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/marsh-thistle and this link tells of the uses of marsh thistle http://www.naturalmedicinalherbs.net/herbs/c/cirsium-palustre=marsh-thi… here's a useful list with descriptions of the thistles found in the UK: http://botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/t/thistl11.html#mar I recently found a bigger verion of what I think is the same species and eating the stem of the bigger verion is easier: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/437846026 but perhaps would have been more tasty using the method described here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/445866055
