Notes:

This little horse fly with huge eyes showed up at my moth sheet. The female also showed up and she's in the last pictures with normal sized eyes.

Thanks Mark, Daniele and Carol for your nice comments. I'm glad you all liked the close-up of the fly's eyes.
Thanks for all the support and great comments, Rob, Lisa, Kathleen, Pradeep, Wild Things, Maria, Dilan, Tina and Bill! I added a picture of the female. She's a little larger and her eyes look normal for a horse fly.
Wonderful shots Tom! Congrats!
Congratulations dear Tom, well done! Super photo!
Congratulations, Tom, on another SOTD!!
Karen, thanks for choosing this as SOTD! And Sergio, Mac, Chamalka and Reza thanks for the nice comments!
Congrats Tom! This awesome macro of a horsefly shows the thousands of lenses that make up its compound eyes. Horseflies have a reputation for delivering a nasty bite, but only the females suck blood - male horseflies feed on pollen and nectar only. Thanks for the nice comments rams4d, Sigg, Neil, LuckyLogan and Maria.
This is a male. Females have a gap between the eyes and have a lot more striping coloration in the eye.
Not much would get past this guy. Great photos, Tom.
Amazing eyes, congrats !!!
