Field Notes

Description:

A fast and feisty, medium to large, 'metallic sheen' beetle with a fairly flat profile, green tinted elytra, red tinted thorax, green tinted head... About 25mm long.

Habitat:

Exploring the walls under strong night lights at the local school,

Notes:

Also called caterpillar hunters, these beetles can emit a strong carbolic acid smell if handled. They are active at night and hunt slower prey and can be useful in controlling armyworms and cutworms. The area was full of both those last night. Go beetle.

Thanks martinl for ID.

"this beetle emits a strong COLOUR resembling that of carbolic acid..."
That's great thanks Martin. Lucky I didn't provoke it too much with the carbolic acid smell. I think I remember those cards too... missed the typo though :-(
I know this one, they are sometimes attracted to lights. I haven't seen a green ground beetle for years. I remember them on collectable cards such as these. Can you notice the typo in the link? http://www.anbg.gov.au/gardens/visiting/exploring/fauna/insects/beetles-ANBG.html
