Field Notes
Description:
Cap 1-5cm across, nearly flat to slightly funnel-shaped; margin inrolled when young, irregular, lobed or scalloped; brilliant cinnabar red, then pinkish orange with age, finally nearly pallid. Gills decurrent, narrow, irregularly branched and vein-like, blunt-edged; pink. Stem 20-50 x 3-9mm; concolorous with cap. Flesh solid; white. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, 6-11 x 4-6µ. Deposit pinkish cream.
Habitat:
Habitat in open areas at edges of mixed woods, often in large numbers. Common. Found widespread throughout North America. Season June-September (later in the West). Spotted growing on a shaded bank beside the driveway on a farm.
