Field Notes

Description:

A chance peak at the ultraviolet upperwings of an Arhopala sp. oakblue or gossamer-winged butterfly (Lycaenidae) as it takes flight. It may be the same species as in this http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/16320294 or in this spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/14934013

Habitat:

Spotted on boundary fence vegetation between a large semi-urban yard and garden, and a disturbed patch of remnant equatorial lowland forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

This is the first time I've succeeded (and this was pure luck) to get a snap of that electric blue. This (these) species only flash while undertaking their characteristic erratic flight.

Leanne, I've been trying for a couple of years! It decided to take flight right as I snapped. :-)
