Field Notes

Description:

Bold as brass!

Habitat:

Spotted by the pond at the Mt. Coot-tha Botanical Gardens in Brisbane QLD.

Notes:

I thought a while before adding this spotting simply because there are plenty of Ibis spottings on PN. I liked this fellow because he was bold (Ibis usually are), and I'm sure if I sat there long enough he would have poked at me or jumped on my lap. He was having a good dig around the gardens and edge of the pond. However, my reason for adding this spotting is because I have a number of 'hot spot' areas in and around Brisbane that I am building up a profile for, and as I frequent these areas it gives me an opportunity to observe exactly what species are around over a period of time, under varying conditions, perhaps displaying different behaviour. On that basis, this guy is as valid as any to add because he's my 'hot spot' Ibis for this location, and I don't always see them here.

I had one poo on my work car once (when I was driving). It was oily and stank, so I abandoned that car and grabbed another. I counted my blessings though. The holy grail would have been a pelican and a convertible. That would keep me laughing for a week.
Haaa! :-) It's the smell of these guys that impresses me. The large rookeries are a real olfactory torture test.
LOL Thanks, kd. Believe me, I've had lots of practice. I reckon I look gorgeous when I leave the house though. The ibis was a breeze by comparison :-)
Stunningly beautiful number 1 pic especially Neil. How to make an ugly fella look gorgeous! Job well done!
Cheers guys. This was a really cool Ibis. I laughed when he walked up beside me, looked me up and down for a moment, then carried on with his business. I watched him for 10 minutes or so. When he was done he scanned me again and then trotted off. No fear!
Thanks, Zariga. They definitely look odd. They're funny birds, and can be very bold and naughty. I secretly laugh every time I see one poking its head out of a dumpster to see if anyone is watching. They can make a mess of things.
There might be plenty of Ibis spottings on PN, but somehow, this is the first time I actually see one of these. And he's lovely! His head seems quite alien-ish to me, makes him look really interesting. Gorgeous indeed, great photo also. I'm happy you decided to share it in the end :)
Cheers Ernst. Not too hard to photograph this fellow. He was more intent on digging for worms than worrying about me.
