There are no Pansy Butterfly in the US, you have some Junonia sp. indeed, these are the Buckeye Butterflies. This is from the same family Nymphalidae and looks like being a Polygonia sp., Comma or Question Mark, but yours should be a Comma Butterfly. Look at the white "C" or comma on the hindwing. I am not sure if we can get down to species level from only a ventral view. Another picture certainly would help much. The hindwings in these Commas are very veriable within the same genus/species.
