Field Notes

Description:

Anthribidae; Choraginae; Araecerini; Araecerus; Araecerus fasciculatus (De Geer, 1775). As is often the case, I had some doubts about my identification of this weevil, There are some websites where pictures labelled A. fasciculatus look like mine, but there are also some which do not look like mine. What I try to do in these circumstances is find a source which gives detailed information (as well as photos) and that usually works. In this case, Wikipedia mentions some points that helped me to decide. Wiki says that A. fasciculatus has a hairy body. That can be seen on the underside of the abdomen in my first picture. Then Wiki mentions that the elytra do not quite cover the posterior of the abdomen and if you look closely at both of my pictures, that can also be seen. There is also the helpful info. that male's antennae are longer than its body. So my pictures obviously show a female. By the way, if you are very observant, you might have noticed that this beetle seems to be trailing some strands of spider silk from its back legs, but I don't think it had just escaped from a spider's web. When I saw it in our back terrace, it was crawling around near the top of the wall and going in and out of the eaves. There must be many old cobwebs up there, so nothing dramatic going on.

Habitat:

This spider was seen on the wall of our back terrace which looks out onto our vegetable patch. So I think I spotted the culprit who has been feasting on the leaves of our eggplants which are full of holes.
