Field Notes

Description:

Only bird with a sideways curved bill.

Habitat:

Estuary

Notes:

On our last half day in New Zealand we visited a nearby estuary before going to the airport. We met a lady with a tripod and asked what could be seen. She said there had been reports of an endemic wrybill but she hadn't seen it. A few minutes later I stopped to photograph a small bird, she asked what it was and I said I didn't know, then she looked closer and said it was the Wrybill! The curved bill can be clearly seen in a couple of the pictures.
