Field Notes

Description:

Prunus serrulata is a popular ornamental deciduous tree because of its dramatic display of flowers in the spring. This picture shows how its large, short tooth, serrations leaves are changing colors during fall due to the lack of the green photosynthetic pigment called chlorophyll a. Prunus leaves also contain another photosynthetic pigment called carotenoids that makes its leaves turn orange-bronze.

Habitat:

it is native of Japan but it grows well in many countries around the world including the state of Virginia.
