Field Notes

Description:

Often mistaken for the bald-faced hornet, it black with a white band around its waist. The wings are black/iridescent.

Habitat:

It is not social like some wasps. The female finds a hole left from carpenter bees or other burrowers and makes her nest. In my rural backyard, surrounded by a field.
